Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Kūfī informed us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Qutayba related to us: Ibn Numayr related to us: I heard my father say: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth used to sit with Abū Ḥanīfa and was an assiduous seeker of hadith. Sufyān heard that he sat with Abū Ḥanīfa and was distressed. One day I saw him come to Sufyān and greet him. He said, ‘How are you, Ḥafṣ? How are you all? Where is your study circle today?’

ʿImrān ibn Firīnām related to us. He said: I heard Saʿd ibn Muʿādh say: I heard Abū Salmān relate from Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth or Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā—Abū ʿIṣma was uncertain—who said: When Ḥammād died, may God have mercy on him, his companions gathered around Abū Ḥanīfa and said: ‘Sit and teach us.’ Abū Ḥanīfa said: ‘I will sit on condition that ten of you guarantee to stay with me for a year.’ They guaranteed it and fulfilled their promise. Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī was among those who fulfilled it.

The uncertainty between two transmitters and the printed form Abū Salmān are retained.

Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Sahl al-Tirmidhī related to us: Muḥammad ibn ʿAlāʾ al-Hamadhānī related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us: Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—related to us, from ʿAlī ibn al-Aqmar: The Messenger of God—God bless him and grant him peace—passed a man praying with his garment hanging loose, and folded it over him.

ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Saʿd al-Hamadhānī related to us: Aḥmad ibn Budayl related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us: I heard al-Zuhrī say: The Messenger of God—God bless him and grant him peace—underwent cupping while fasting.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Dīnawarī related to us: Ḥumayd ibn al-Rabīʿ related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās—may God be pleased with them both—who said: A kiss does not require ablution.

Ṣāliḥ ibn Muḥammad al-Asadī related to us: Shurayḥ ibn Yūnus related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm—may God have mercy on them—who said: When the imam performs the sunset prayer as the prayer of fear, he prays two units with the first group and one unit with the other group. Then each group makes up what it missed, and he pronounces the concluding salutation with them all.

Khalaf ibn ʿĀmir ibn Saʿīd al-Hamadhānī related to us: Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥabīb ibn al-Shahīd related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm—may God have mercy on them—who said: If a slain person is found in a people’s quarter, and he was known for wickedness, no blood money is due for him.

Al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān related to us: Ibn Abī Shayba related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Ḥammād, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr—may God have mercy on them—who said: Drink aged raisin nabīdh as long as it remains sweet and tingles on the tongue.

The source’s beverage term nabīdh is retained without assigning an alcohol content.

Al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān related to us: Ibn Abī Shayba related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm—may God have mercy on them—who said: If he marries a free woman and a slave woman in a single contract, both marriages are invalid.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Shurayḥ related to us: Ibn al-Afṭas al-Naysābūrī related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Ḥammād—may God have mercy on them—who said: Any accidental killing or wounding committed by a person under covenant is chargeable to him and his heirs; it does not extend to the other members of his religion. If a woman among them accidentally causes killing or wounding, it falls upon her male heirs.

‘People under covenant’ renders ahl al-ʿahd. The liability described is retained without supplying further procedural rules.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd Allāh related to us: ʿAlī ibn Salama al-Labaqī related to us, from Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth, who said: I asked Abū Ḥanīfa about a man who says to his wife, ‘You are free.’ He said, ‘If he intended divorce, it is divorce.’ And about a man who says to his slave woman, ‘You are divorced.’ He said, ‘It has no effect.’

My father related to us: Asbāṭ ibn al-Yasaʿ informed us: Abū Ḥafṣ related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from one of his companions, from Ibrāhīm—may God have mercy on them—who said: All sea game is disapproved of except fish.

Al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān related to us: Ibn Abī Shayba related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us, from al-Shaybānī and Abū Ḥanīfa, from Ḥammād—may God have mercy on them—who said: The testimony of a midwife alone is admissible. One of the two said, ‘Even if she is Jewish.’

The source does not identify which of the two transmitters added the final qualification.

Ḥātim ibn Būr ibn al-Khaṭṭāb al-Tirmidhī related to us: al-Jārūd ibn Muʿādh related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us: I asked ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd, ‘What did al-Ḥasan say about slaves contracted together to purchase their freedom, some of whom then die?’ He said, ‘The deceased’s share is deducted from what they owe.’ And I heard Ḥafṣ say, ‘Abū Ḥanīfa did not deduct anything from what they owed.’

ʿAlī ibn Mūsā related to us: Abū Aḥmad ibn Abī Fudayk al-Baghdādī related to us: Ḥusayn ibn ʿAmr al-ʿAnqazī related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us: I saw Abū Ḥanīfa in a dream and said, ‘Abū Ḥanīfa, what did God do with you?’ He said, ‘He forgave me.’ I asked, ‘For which opinion were you praised?’ He said—and excellent was what he said—‘The opinion is ʿAbd Allāh’s opinion. I saw Ibn al-Yamān zealously guarding his religion’—meaning Ḥudhayfa.

Al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān informed us: Ibn Abī Shayba related to us: Ḥafṣ related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from one of his companions, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm; and Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ—may God have mercy on them: Concerning when villagers offer their sacrifices, one of the two said, ‘When dawn breaks,’ and the other said, ‘When the sun rises.’

The parallel attributions follow the supplied chain; the report does not specify which answer belongs to which of the two.

Ṣāliḥ ibn Abī Rumayḥ wrote to me: Abū Usāma al-Kalbī related to us in Kufa: ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us: My father related to us: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad, from ʿĀʾisha—may God be pleased with her—from the Prophet—God bless him and grant him peace—who said: ‘The pen has been lifted from three: from the child until he grows up, from the insane person until he regains reason, and from the sleeper until he wakes.’

Abū al-Layth al-Ḥārith ibn Asad ibn al-Ḥārith al-Asadābādhī related to us: al-Maʿrūf ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Fāʾid al-Kinānī, a Syrian, related to us: Mūsā ibn Sulaymān Abū Sulaymān al-Jūzjānī related to us: I heard Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth say: I heard Abū Ḥanīfa’s books and transmitted accounts from him. I never saw anyone with a sharper mind or more knowledgeable about what is invalid and valid in matters of legal judgments.

Aḥmad ibn al-Layth al-Balkhī, from Khayrān, related to us: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn al-Faḍl related to us: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Khaythama related to us: Sulaymān ibn Manṣūr related to us: I heard Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth say: Whenever I heard a report from a shaykh, I presented it to Abū Ḥanīfa. He would explain its different applications and clarify its meaning for me.

Aḥmad ibn al-Layth al-Balkhī related to us: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Khaythama related to us: Sulaymān ibn Manṣūr related to us: I heard Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth say: I reduced my visits to Sufyān because he disliked my visiting Abū Ḥanīfa—may God be pleased with him—and sitting with him. Whenever he saw me, he discouraged me from him, so I reduced my visits to him.

Qabīṣa ibn al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṭabarī related to us: ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān al-Sijzī related to us: I heard Muḥammad ibn Samāʿa say: I heard Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth say: Abū Ḥanīfa is a rare man. I have never heard of his like in understanding and insight.

Al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān informed us: Ibn Abī Shayba related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm—may God have mercy on them—who said: If she enters consecration for ʿumra and fears missing the pilgrimage, she enters consecration for pilgrimage and abandons the ʿumra. She owes a sacrificial offering and an ʿumra.
