حدثنا محمد بن إسحاق بن عثمان السمسار البخاري، قال: حدثنا داود بن مخراق الفاريابي، قال: حدثنا سعيد بن سالم القداح، قال: كثيرا ما كنا ندير مسائل أبي حنيفة رضي الله عنه بين يدي ابن جريج فكان يستحسنها، وكان محبا لأبي حنيفة رضي الله عنه، كثير الذكر له.

He said: We often discussed Abū Ḥanīfa’s legal questions in Ibn Jurayj’s presence, and he approved of them. He loved Abū Ḥanīfa, may God be pleased with him, and mentioned him often.

Al-Ḥasan ibn Maʿrūf al-Bukhārī, who settled in Balkh, related to us. He said: Muḥammad ibn Zanbūr related to us. He said: al-Ḥārith ibn ʿUmayr al-Makkī related to us. He said: When Abū Ḥanīfa, may God be pleased with him, came to Mecca, those who sat with him most often were Ibn Jurayj and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād. Ibn Jurayj praised him and loved him.

He said: I heard my father relate from al-Ḥusayn ibn Ziyād, who said: Ibn Jurayj would sometimes mention a legal question and say: ‘What does your companion say about this question?’ At other times, he would mention something from Abū Ḥanīfa’s views, may God be pleased with him.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad related to us. He said: Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd related to us. He said: Ḥasan ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ al-Dawāhī related to us. He said: Hishām ibn Yūsuf said: I have never seen anyone more learned in jurisprudence than Abū Ḥanīfa, may God be pleased with him. I heard Ibn Jurayj, when he was mentioned in his presence, express great admiration for him and mention things about him, and speak further.
The final phrase وذكر منه وذكر is terse in the printed text; it has not been expanded into an unstated account.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Surayj al-Bukhārī related to us. He said: Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Nūḥ, Abū al-Faḍl, related to us with his permission. He said: Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā al-Ṭabbāʿ related to me. He said: I heard Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā say: I heard Rawḥ—that is, Ibn ʿUbāda—say: I was with Ibn Jurayj in the year 150 when news of the death of Abū Ḥanīfa, may God be pleased with him, reached him. He said, “We belong to God and to Him we return,” grieved, and then said: “What knowledge has been lost!” He said: Ibn Jurayj also died that year.

حدثنا علي بن الحسين بن سعد الكسّي، قال: سمعت الفتح بن عمرو يقول: سمعت اللؤلؤي يقول: وافيت مكة، فإذا أنا بيحيى بن سليم الطائفي جالساً في مَلاء وهو يقرأ كتاب مناسك ابن جريج قال: وكان يقول: قال لي عطاء، وسألت عطاء. قال: فأعجب الشيخ بها، فقال: أين أبو حنيفة عن هذه المسائل؟ قال فقلت: قد جاء والله موضع الكلام، قال فقلت له: يرحمك الله، أما أبو حنيفة رضي الله عنه فقد مضى لسبيله، وأنا من أخص تلاميذه، أفتأذن لي في الكلام؟ قال: فقال لي: من أنت؟ قلت: أنا الحسن بن زياد اللؤلؤي، قال فقال: لا آذن لك ثم لا آذن لك، ولو أذن لي لتركته نكالاً في العالمين.

ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Saʿd al-Kassī related to us. He said: I heard al-Fatḥ ibn ʿAmr say: I heard al-Luʾluʾī say: I arrived in Mecca and found Yaḥyā ibn Sulaym al-Ṭāʾifī sitting among a gathering, reading Ibn Jurayj’s book on the pilgrimage rites. He said: He would say, “ʿAṭāʾ said to me,” and “I asked ʿAṭāʾ.” He said: The shaykh was impressed by these questions and said: “Where is Abū Ḥanīfa in relation to these questions?” I said: “By God, now the occasion to speak has come.” I said to him: “May God have mercy on you! Abū Ḥanīfa, may God be pleased with him, has passed away, and I am one of his closest students. Will you permit me to speak?” He said to me: “Who are you?” I said: “I am al-Ḥasan ibn Ziyād al-Luʾluʾī.” He said: “I will not permit you—again, I will not permit you.” Had he permitted me, I would have made him a warning to everyone.

And al-Ḥārith ibn Asad related to us. He said: Maʿrūf ibn al-Ḥasan related to us. He said: Khallād ibn Yaḥyā related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, may God be pleased with him, who said: I have never seen anyone held in greater favor by ʿAṭāʾ than Ibn Jurayj. He used to ask many questions. Sometimes ʿAṭāʾ would shout at him, saying: “How much longer?” Ibn Jurayj would reply: “One can never have enough knowledge.”

حدثنا علي بن الحسن الكسِّي، قال: سمعت الفتح بن عمرو يقول: سمعت الحسن بن زياد يقول: جلست إلى يحيى بن سليم الطائفي، فجعل يثني على ابن جريج ويمدحه ويتعجب من مسائله، ويقول: أين المسكين أبو حنيفة عن هذه المسائل، فقلت له: رحمك الله أتأذن لي أن أسألك عن شيء من مسائل أبي حنيفة؟ فقال لي: من أنت؟ فقلت: الحسن بن زياد اللؤلؤي، قال: لا آذن لك، ثم لا آذن لك، ولو أذن لي لجعلته نكالاً في العالمين.
