Ibn Muljam passed before him, and he asked him about his lineage. He claimed descent from someone other than his father. ʿAlī told him: “You lie.” This happened repeatedly: each time he ascribed himself to someone other than his father, ʿAlī said: “You lie.” Finally he ascribed himself to his own father, and ʿAlī said: “You speak the truth. I praise Him, seek His help, believe in Him and rely upon Him. We seek refuge in God from the evil within ourselves and from our bad deeds. Whomever God guides, none can lead astray; whomever He leads astray, none can guide. I testify that there is no god but God alone, without partner, and that Muḥammad is His servant and messenger. ‘You who believe! Be mindful of God, in whose name you ask one another, and of ties of kinship. God is ever watchful over you’ [al-Nisāʾ: 1]. ‘You who believe! Be mindful of God as He deserves, and do not die except as Muslims’ [Āl ʿImrān: 102]. ‘You who believe! Be mindful of God and speak upright words. He will set your deeds right for you and forgive your sins. Whoever obeys God and His Messenger has attained a tremendous triumph’ [al-Aḥzāb: 70].”
