ابن بريدة

Muḥammad ibn Hammām related to us. He said: Muḥammad ibn Yazīd related to us. He said: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from ʿAlqama ibn Marthad, from Ibn Burayda, from his father, who said: One day they discussed ill fortune in the presence of the Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace. The Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Ill fortune is in three things: the horse, the house and the woman. The ill fortune of a horse is that it is unruly and refuses to be ridden; the ill fortune of a woman is that she is bad-tempered and barren; and the ill fortune of a house is that it is cramped and has bad neighbors.”

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd al-Hamdānī informed us. He said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Nūḥ al-Balkhī related to us. He said: My father related to us. He said: Khārija related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from ʿAlqama ibn Marthad, from Ibn Burayda, from his father, who said: Whenever the Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace, appointed a commander or dispatched a raiding party, he enjoined its commander to fear God and to care for the Muslims with him.

Al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAzīz al-Qaṭṭān al-Marwazī related to us. He said: Bishr ibn Yaḥyā related to us. He said: al-Naḍr ibn Muḥammad related to us. He said: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us, from ʿAlqama ibn Marthad, from Ibn Burayda, from his father, may God be pleased with him, who said: Māʿiz ibn Mālik came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and said that he had committed illicit intercourse and asked him to carry out the prescribed punishment upon him. The Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace, sent him back. He came a second time, and he sent him back; then a third time, and he sent him back. Then he came a fourth time and said that he had committed illicit intercourse and asked him to carry out the prescribed punishment. He asked his companions about him: “Do you find anything wrong with his reason?” They replied: “No.” He said: “Take him away and stone him.” He was taken away and stoned for a while. When death was slow in coming, he moved to a place with many stones and stood there. The Muslims came to him and battered him with stones until they killed him, may God be pleased with them. This reached the Prophet, peace be upon him, who said: “Why did you not let him go?”

He said: Abū Ḥanīfa informed us, from ʿAlqama ibn Marthad, from Ibn Burayda, from his father, may God be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace, said: “One who points the way to good is like the one who does it.”
