حدثنا محمود بن والان المروزي، قال: حدثنا حامد بن آدم، قال: حدثني سلم بن سالم، قال: سمعت رجلاً من خيار أهل مكة، قال: بات أبو حنيفة رضي الله عنه عندنا تسع ليال، فما رأيته نام فيها.

Maḥmūd ibn Wālān al-Marwazī related to us. He said: Ḥāmid ibn Ādam related to us. He said: Salm ibn Sālim related to me. He said: I heard a man among the best people of Mecca say: Abū Ḥanīfa, may God be pleased with him, spent nine nights with us, and I did not see him sleep during them.

حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله بن سهل، قال: سمعت أبا يوسف الدَّشتكي الرازي، قال: حدثنا أبو يحيى الحماني، وحدثنا إبراهيم بن علي بن الحسن الترمذي، قال: حدثنا محمد بن فضيل الترمذي، عن أبي يحيى الحماني، وحدثنا جيهان بن أبي الحسن، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الفضيل، قال: حدثنا أبو يحيى الحماني، قال: حدثنا سلم بن سالم، عن أبي الجويرية، قال: صحبت حماد بن أبي سليمان، وعلقمة بن مرثد، ومحارب بن دثار، وعون بن عبد الله، رحمة الله عليهم، وصحبت أبا حنيفة رحمة الله عليه، فما كان في القوم رجل أحسن ليلاً من أبي حنيفة رضوان الله عليه، صحبته ستة أشهر فما رأيته وضع جنبه ليلة واحدة.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sahl related to us: I heard Abū Yūsuf al-Dashtakī al-Rāzī say: Abū Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmānī related to us. And Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Tirmidhī related to us: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl al-Tirmidhī related to us, from Abū Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmānī. And Jayhān ibn Abī al-Ḥasan related to us: Muḥammad ibn al-Fuḍayl related to us: Abū Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmānī related to us: Salm ibn Sālim related to us, from Abū al-Juwayriyya, who said: I accompanied Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān, ʿAlqama ibn Marthad, Muḥārib ibn Dithār, and ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh—may God have mercy on them—and I accompanied Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him. None of those men spent his nights better than Abū Ḥanīfa—may God be pleased with him. I accompanied him for six months and never saw him lie down for a single night.

حدثنا أحمد بن محمد، قال: حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله بن أبي حكيمة، قال: حدثنا على بن الحسن أخو أبي بشر، قال: أخبرنا سلم بن سالم، قال: حدثني خلاد بن يزيد، قال: صحبت عون بن عبد الله، وحماد بن أبي سليمان، وعلقمة بن مرثد، ومحارب بن دثار وآخرين غيرهم رحمة الله عليهم أجمعين، فما رأيت أحداً أحسن ليلاً من أبي حنيفة رحمة الله عليه، ولقد صحبته ستة أشهر ما وضع جنبه فيها على فراش، رحمة الله عليه وعلى متابعيه.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad related to us: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ḥakīma related to us: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan, Abū Bishr’s brother, related to us: Salm ibn Sālim informed us: Khallād ibn Yazīd related to me: I accompanied ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān, ʿAlqama ibn Marthad, Muḥārib ibn Dithār, and others besides them—may God have mercy on them all. I never saw anyone spend his nights better than Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him. I accompanied him for six months, during which he never lay down on a bed. May God have mercy on him and his followers.

حدثنا إسماعيل بن بشر، قال: حدثنا حفص بن عمرو القاري، قال: حدثنا سلم بن سالم، قال: حدثني المفضل الكوفي، قال: شهدنا مِلاكَ رجل بالكوفة، وشهد معنا سفيان الثوري، وشريك، وغيرهم، فلما طال مقامهم قالوا لصاحب الأمر: من بقي؟ قال: ننتظر أبا حنيفة وقد بعثنا إليه فانتظروه، فلما طال عليهم المجلس قال سفيان لصاحب الأمر: لم يجيء بعدُ أبو حنيفة؟ قال: لا، واحتشم منهم، قال: يا أبا عبد الله! اُخطب، فقال سفيان لشريك: اُخطب، فقال شريك لسفيان: اُخطب فأنت أحق، فكانوا في ذلك إذ حضر أبو حنيفة رحمة الله عليه، فقال سفيان: قد جاء مَن يكفينا، فلما جلس أبو حنيفة رحمة الله عليه قال له صاحب الأمر: اُخطب يا أبا حنيفة قال: فحمد الله أبو حنيفة وأثنى عليه، فقال: أما بعد فإن الكلام كثير ومحكمه يسير، وإن الكلام لا ينتهي حتى يُنتهى عنه، وإن خير الكلام ما أريد به وجه الله تعالى، وشر الكلام ما يكون لغير الله، ثم عقد النكاح. قال: فقال سفيان لشريك: الأمر كما ترى.

Ismāʿīl ibn Bishr related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAmr al-Qārī related to us: Salm ibn Sālim related to us: al-Mufaḍḍal al-Kūfī related to me: We attended a man’s marriage contract ceremony in Kufa. Sufyān al-Thawrī, Sharīk, and others were also present. When they had waited a long time, they asked the host, ‘Who remains?’ He said, ‘We are waiting for Abū Ḥanīfa; we have sent for him.’ They waited. When the gathering had gone on a long time, Sufyān asked the host, ‘Has Abū Ḥanīfa still not come?’ He said, ‘No,’ feeling embarrassed before them, and said, ‘Abū ʿAbd Allāh, deliver the address.’ Sufyān said to Sharīk, ‘You deliver it.’ Sharīk said to Sufyān, ‘You deliver it; you have greater claim.’ While this was happening, Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—arrived. Sufyān said, ‘The one who will suffice us has come.’ When Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—sat down, the host said, ‘Deliver the address, Abū Ḥanīfa.’ Abū Ḥanīfa praised and extolled God, then said, ‘To proceed: speech is plentiful, but its sound substance is little. Speech does not end until one puts an end to it. The best speech is that intended for God Most High’s countenance, and the worst is that directed to other than God.’ Then he concluded the marriage contract. Sufyān said to Sharīk, ‘The matter is as you see.’

حدثنا محمد بن يزيد، قال: حدثنا المسيب بن إسحاق، قال: حدثنا السري أخو أفلح بن حميد، قال: حدثنا حماد بن أبي حنيفة رحمة الله عليهم، وحدثنا رجاء بن سويد النسفي، قال: حدثنا حم بن نوح، قال: حدثنا سلم بن سالم، قال: أخبرنا حماد بن أبي حنيفة، عن داود بن أبي هند، عن شهر بن حوشب، عن الحارث بن عميرة، أنه انتهى إلى حلقة ابن مسعود فقال: أنا مؤمن حقاً، فقال عبد الله: أما أني لو قلتها لأيقنت أني من أهل الجنة، فقال: يا أبا عبد الرحمن! والله إنها لمن زلّاتك، نشدتك بالله أتعلم أن رسول الله ﷺ فارق الدنيا وترك الناس على ثلاثة أصناف: مؤمن السر مؤمن العلانية فذلك مؤمن حقاً عند الله وعند رسوله وعند المؤمنين، وكافر السر كافر العلانية فهو كافر عند الله وعند رسوله وعند المؤمنين، ومؤمن العلانية كافر السريرة فذلك منافق عند الله وعند رسوله وعند المؤمنين، فنشدتك بالله من أي ثلاث كنت حيث فارق رسول الله الدنيا؟ قال: كنت والله مؤمن السر مؤمن العلانية، وأنا مؤمن حقاً، هذه زلتي فادفنوها ولا ترووها عني.
