إبراهيم بن طهمان

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Saʿdī related to us. He said: al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUthmān related to us, from one of his teachers, who said: Khārija was asked: “May I say that I am a believer in God’s sight?” He replied: “Yes. If you are truthful, it will not harm you.” “What if I am asked: Is your faith like the faith of Gabriel, Michael and the angels?” He said: “Say to the person asking: Describe to me the faith of Gabriel and Michael. If they describe affirmation of God’s oneness and acknowledgment, say: This is our faith. If He wills, He will forgive me, and if He wills, He will punish me for my sins. I fear my sins; I do not fear my faith.” Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān also said, concerning those who qualify their faith by saying, “I am a believer, if God wills”: Ibn Ṭahmān said: “If they had sins such as illicit intercourse and theft, that would be better than what they say.” I heard ʿAbd al-Majīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād say: “When you are asked, Are you truly a believer? say: Yes. One cannot be falsely a believer.”

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī, the traditionist of Balkh, and Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Sharqī al-Naysābūrī related to us. They said: Qaṭan ibn Ibrāhīm al-Naysābūrī related to us. He said: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us. He said: Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān informed us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm, may God have mercy on them, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Jadalī, from Abū Masʿūd al-Anṣārī, may God be pleased with him, who said: The Prophet, God bless him and grant him peace, performed witr at the beginning, middle and end of the night, to give Muslims latitude: whichever of these they adopted would be correct. But whoever expects to rise for night prayer should make his witr at the end of the night, for that is better.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Sharqī related to us. He said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us. He said: My father related to me. He said: Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from al-Haytham, from Mūsā ibn Ṭalḥa, from Ibn al-Ḥawtakiyya, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may God be pleased with him, who said: A hare was brought to the Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace. He instructed his companions to eat, and they ate. He asked the man who had brought it: “Why do you not eat some?” He said: “I am fasting.” He asked: “What kind of fast?” He said: “A voluntary one.” He said: “Why not the white days?”

The “white days” are the days around the full moon; the abbreviated wording is retained.

Muḥammad ibn Hammām al-Naysābūrī related to us. He said: Muḥammad ibn Yazīd related to us. He said: Ḥammād ibn Qīrāṭ related to us. He said: Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān related to us. He said: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm, may God have mercy on them: He was asked about a sick person who loses consciousness. He said: “As for the prayers of one day, he makes them up. If it exceeds that, he is excused from them, God willing.”

Ṣāliḥ ibn Muḥammad al-Asadī related to us. He said: Qaṭan ibn Ibrāhīm related to us. He said: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us. Also Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Sharqī and ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sarakhsī related to us. They said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us. He said: My father related to us. He said: Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from al-Haytham, from al-Shaʿbī, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: A man of Banū Salima caught a hare. Finding nothing else, he slaughtered it with a flint. The Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed him to eat it.

Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā wrote to me. He said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥafṣ related to us. He said: My father related to me. He said: Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān related to me, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Bilāl, from someone who related to him from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, may God be pleased with him, who said: When he divorced Sawda, the Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace, said to her: “Observe your waiting period.”

Al-ʿAbbās ibn Ḥamza related to us. He said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Jarrāḥ related to us. He said: ʿAbd al-Khāliq related to us. He said: Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān related to me, from Abū Ḥanīfa, who said: I heard Ḥammād say: “If a man divorces his wife before consummation and then has intercourse with her, thinking that he is entitled to take her back, she is entitled to a dower and a half: half a dower on account of the divorce, and a full dower on account of the intercourse.”

Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Tirmidhī related to us. He said: Al-ʿAbbās ibn Zurāra related to us. He said: Naṣr ibn Bāb related to us. He said: I heard Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān report from Abū Ḥanīfa concerning a hide: “If it is tanned—by whatever means it is tanned, with earth or salt—or dries by itself, and that prevents it from decaying, then that constitutes tanning for it.”

It was related to me from Aḥmad ibn Muṣʿab. He said: Saʿīd ibn Yazīd al-Farrāʾ related to us. He said: Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, may God have mercy on him: Concerning a man who bequeathed a share of his property to another man, he said: “He receives the smallest share.”

Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Simsār related to us. He said: Muḥammad ibn Yazīd related to us. He said: Ḥammād ibn Qīrāṭ related to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm, may God have mercy on them, who said: When a man and a woman are buried together in one grave, the woman is placed behind the man, and a barrier of earth is placed between them.

My father related to us. He said: Asbāṭ ibn al-Yasaʿ related to us. He said: Yaʿqūb ibn ʿUthmān, originally from Merv, related to us. He said: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Naysābūrī related to us. He said: Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān related to me: He transmitted many reports from Abū Ḥanīfa.
