Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd Allāh (transmitter from Bukayr ibn Maʿrūf)

Ṣāliḥ ibn Saʿīd ibn Mirdās al-Tirmidhī related to us. He said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥarb related to us. He said: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us, from Bukayr ibn Maʿrūf. He said: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us, from al-Haytham, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from Umm Salama, God be pleased with her, that she said: “A slave contracted to purchase his freedom remains a slave as long as he owes a dirham.”

Ṣāliḥ ibn Saʿīd related to us. He said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥarb related to us. He said: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us. He said: Bukayr ibn Maʿrūf related to us. He said: I said to Abū Ḥanīfa: “People speak against you, yet you do not speak against anyone?” He replied: “That is God’s bounty; He gives it to whomever He wills.”

Ṣāliḥ ibn Saʿīd al-Tirmidhī related to us. He said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥarb related to us. He said: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us. He said: I heard Bukayr ibn Maʿrūf say: I was an intimate companion of Abū Ḥanīfa at home and on journeys, and visited him at night in his house. Little of his affairs was concealed from me. I saw no one more diligent than he was: fasting by day, standing in prayer by night, reciting the Book of God, humble and unceasing in obedience to God, seeking reward in teaching and in illuminating meanings that people found difficult. I cannot describe the full reality of his qualities. May God have abundant mercy upon him.
