al-Laknawī
al-Fawāʾid al-Bahiyya
South Asia became a major setting for Hanafi legal learning, extending far beyond the two works selected here. The Arabic fatwa collection known as al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya illustrates the scale of that legal literature. A small regional catalogue should not be mistaken for a small scholarly tradition.
Lucknow is especially relevant to the books shown below. Abd al-Hayy al-Laknawi’s scholarship joined biographical research with work on law and hadith. This gives the regional selection a late perspective: earlier scholars and books are gathered, assessed and made accessible to another generation of readers.

ظفر أحمد العثمانيẒafar Aḥmad ʿUthmānīAl-Laknawi’s al-Fawa’id al-Bahiyya and Tarab al-Amathil form the Indian part of this catalogue. They belong to the tabaqat side of the atlas: the subject is a succession of scholars, not only the virtues of Abu Hanifa. Their scope reaches beyond the author’s own region.
Use these entries as a later vantage point on the wider tradition. Follow their recorded sources back to earlier Egyptian, Hijazi and Ottoman compilations, and compare what is retained or omitted. The atlas’s selection concerns manaqib and tabaqat; it is not a complete bibliography of South Asian Hanafi writing.
