Sahl ibn Khalaf ibn Wardān al-Qaṭṭān al-Bukhārī related to us. He said: Abū Saʿīd al-Haytham related to us in Samarkand. He said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Ḥassān related to us. He said: I was with Sufyān al-Thawrī when a man came and mentioned Abū Ḥanīfa to him. Al-Thawrī said: ‘Abū Ḥanīfa has been given skill in argument.’ The man said: ‘Sufyān! If you sat with him, you would know that you have never sat with anyone like him.’ They later met in the mosque of Kufa. When they parted, Sufyān said: ‘I do not think anyone among the Muslims could sit with this man without yielding to his jurisprudence, scrupulousness, and insight’—meaning Abū Ḥanīfa—‘and the time I spent with him increased my illumination and insight.’ Thereafter, when his case was mentioned in his presence, he would speak well of him and would not allow anyone to speak against him.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā al-Rāzī related to us. He said: ʿUmar ibn Mudrik related to us. He said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Ḥassān related to us. He said: Bukayr ibn Maʿrūf related to us. He said: Misʿar related to me. He said: I saw Abū Ḥanīfa, may God have mercy on him, enter his home after the late night prayer, then come out, enter the mosque, and stand praying. He began reciting the Qurʾān. When he reached the verse, ‘Those who recite God’s Book, establish prayer, and spend secretly and openly from what We have provided them hope for a trade that will never perish,’ he repeated it many times. Then he went on until he reached, ‘Or one who is devout during the hours of the night, prostrating and standing, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for his Lord’s mercy.’ He kept repeating it until I feared dawn would come upon him. When he feared morning was approaching, he went on and completed the Qurʾān. May God have abundant mercy on him.
