Zayd ibn Thābit

It is related that Abū Ḥanīfa [said] to al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā al-Shaybānī: “I shall give you an unusual hadith. Ḥammād related to me, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buḥayna, from Zayd ibn Thābit, who said: The Messenger of God asked, ‘Zayd, have you married?’ I said no. He said, ‘Marry: you will gain sufficiency along with chastity. Do not marry five types: a shahbara, a lahbara, a nahbara, a habdara or a lafūt.’” Zayd said: “Messenger of God, we do not know what these mean.” The Prophet explained: “The shahbara is a blue-eyed, foul-mouthed woman; the lahbara is tall and emaciated; the nahbara is short and unattractive; the habdara is an old woman who has turned her back [on youth]; and the lafūt has a child by someone other than you.”
