Abū Saʿd al-Ṣaghānī

Zayd ibn Yaḥyā, Abū Usāma, related to us. He said: Yaḥyā ibn Mūsā related to us. He said: I heard Abū Saʿd al-Ṣaghānī say: I used to visit Abū Ḥanīfa and sometimes al-Thawrī. When I came to Sufyān, he would ask: ‘Where were you?’ I would say: ‘With Abū Ḥanīfa.’ He would say: ‘You were with a man filled with knowledge and jurisprudence.’ When I was with al-Thawrī and then came to Abū Ḥanīfa, he would ask: ‘Where were you?’ I would say: ‘With al-Thawrī.’ He would say: ‘You were with a man whom al-Aswad and ʿAlqama would need, if they were alive.’
