حدثنا صالح بن محمد الأسدي، قال: حدثني أحمد بن الأزهر العبدي، قال: حدثني رواد بن الجراح العسقلاني، قال: حدثنا محمد بن عبيد الله، قال: دخلنا على قتادة، فقال له أبو حنيفة: مؤمن أنت؟ فقال: أنا مؤمن بالله، وملائكته، وكتبه، ورسله، والجنة، والنار، والموت، والبعث، فأما أن أكون من الذين سبقت لهم الدرجات العلى، فوالله ما أدري أنا منهم أم لا، قال: فخرجنا من عنده، فقال صاحب لأبي حنيفة رحمة الله عليه حين خرج: هو شاكٌّ؟ فقال أبو حنيفة: ما هو بشاكٍّ.

Ṣāliḥ ibn Muḥammad al-Asadī related to us. He said: Aḥmad ibn al-Azhar al-ʿAbdī related to me. He said: Rawwād ibn al-Jarrāḥ al-ʿAsqalānī related to me. He said: Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh related to us. He said: We visited Qatāda. Abū Ḥanīfa asked him: ‘Are you a believer?’ He said: ‘I believe in God, His angels, His books, His messengers, Paradise, the Fire, death, and resurrection. But as for being among those for whom the highest ranks have already been ordained, by God, I do not know whether I am among them.’ We left him. As they came out, a companion said to Abū Ḥanīfa, may God have mercy on him: ‘Is he doubting?’ Abū Ḥanīfa said: ‘He is not doubting.’
