Yaḥyā ibn al-Ḍurays

Abū ʿUbayda Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Surayj related to us. He said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mubārak related to us. He said: Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn related to us. And ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd Allāh and others related to us. He said: ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad al-Dūrī related to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn. He said: ʿUbayd ibn Abī Qurra related to us. He said: Yaḥyā ibn al-Ḍurays related to us. He said: Abū Ḥanīfa said: “Whatever we find in the Book of God, we adopt. If we do not find it in the Book of God, then from the Sunna of the Messenger of God; we have no opinion of our own there. If we do not find it from the Messenger of God, then from the Companions, God’s good pleasure be upon them, and I have a choice in that. If we do not [find it] from the Companions, then from the Successors; after that we compete with them.”

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Balkhī related to us. He said: Muḥammad ibn Naṣr al-Marwazī related to us. He said: Aḥmad ibn ʿAmr related to us. He said: Yaḥyā ibn al-Ḍurays related to me. He said: I was present with Sufyān al-Thawrī when he was told: “Abū Ḥanīfa used to say that if a leather sock has a hole large enough for three fingers to enter, one may not wipe over it.” Sufyān said: “Glory be to God! Who said this, and from whom did he take it? Do they think the leather socks of the companions of the Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace, had no holes?” Sufyān then said: “One may wipe over the leather sock as long as it is called a leather sock.”
