حدثنا محمد بن علي السمسار البلخي، قال: حدثنا محمد بن أبي بكر المقدمي، قال: حدثني الحكم بن ظهير، قال: حدثنا أبو حنيفة، عن ثابت البناني، عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما:أنه شرب لبناً ولم يتوضأ، وقال: لا تُبالِه، اسمح يُسْمح لك.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Simsār al-Balkhī related to us: Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Muqaddamī related to us: al-Ḥakam ibn Ẓuhayr related to me: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us, from Thābit al-Bunānī, from Ibn ʿAbbās—may God be pleased with them both: He drank milk without performing ablution and said, ‘Pay no heed to it. Be lenient, and leniency will be shown to you.’

حدثنا أحمد بن محمد، قال: حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن هشام، قال: حدثنا محمد بن إسماعيل العطّار، قال: حدثني إبراهيم بن الحكم بن ظهير، عن أبيه، عن أبي حنيفة رضوان الله عليه، قال:قال رجل لزيد بن علي: قضى الله المعاصي؟ قال: أفعصى قسراً؟ فقال أبو حنيفة رحمة الله عليه: ما رأيت جواباً أسرع منه.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad related to us: Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Hishām related to us: Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-ʿAṭṭār related to us: Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥakam ibn Ẓuhayr related to me, from his father, from Abū Ḥanīfa—may God be pleased with him—who said: A man said to Zayd ibn ʿAlī, ‘Did God decree sins?’ He said, ‘Was He then disobeyed by compulsion?’ Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—said, ‘I have never seen a quicker answer.’
The terse rhetorical question retains its ambiguity rather than adding a developed theological explanation.
