Related to us: Abū al-Faḍl Aḥmad ibn Khushnām, the son of ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn al-Faḍl’s sister, and al-Faḍl ibn Bassām; they said: related to us: ʿAbbās al-Dūrī; he said: I heard: Sufyān ibn Ziyād, who said: Abū Ḥanīfa was exceptionally scrupulous. He was a silk merchant and scrutinized his buying and selling with the utmost care. A man from Medina came to Kufa to buy his equipment. He sought a cloth and described it. He was told: “You will not find a cloth like this [except with a jurist here who is a silk merchant], called Abū Ḥanīfa.” He was told: “When you come to his shop and he brings out what you request, take it at the price he asks. Do not haggle with him; weigh out the sum he asks.” The man sought the shop and was directed to it. He found one of Abū Ḥanīfa’s pupils there and thought he was Abū Ḥanīfa. He asked him for the cloth, and the pupil brought it out. He asked: “How much is this cloth?” He said: “One thousand dirhams.” The man did not haggle; he weighed out a thousand dirhams, took the cloth, finished acquiring his equipment and went to Medina. Some days later Abū Ḥanīfa asked for the cloth. The pupil told him he had sold it. He asked: “For how much?” He said: “A full thousand dirhams.” Abū Ḥanīfa said: “You deceive people while you are with me in my shop?” He removed him from his shop, prepared to travel to Medina and took a thousand dirhams. He sought the man and found him praying with the cloth on. Abū Ḥanīfa began praying until the man finished his prayer, then approached him and said: “This cloth you are wearing is mine.” The man said: “How can that be, when I bought it in Kufa from Abū Ḥanīfa for a thousand dirhams?” Abū Ḥanīfa asked: “Would you recognize him if you saw him?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “I am Abū Ḥanīfa. Did you buy it from me?” He said: “No.” He said: “Take your money and return my cloth.” Abū Ḥanīfa told him what had happened. The man said: “I have worn it several times, so it would not be right for me to return it. If you wish, I shall pay you whatever extra you ask.” He said: “I want no increase. The cloth’s price is four hundred dirhams. If you wish, I shall return six hundred dirhams and the cloth is yours. Otherwise, take the redemption payment and return my cloth. [As for what] you have worn, you are released from liability.” The man did not return the cloth. [He said: “I was content with it at a thousand dirhams.” Abū Ḥanīfa refused, so the man said: “If that is so, return the six hundred to me.” He returned the six hundred and left him the cloth.] He returned to Kufa.

The printed al-fakk is rendered “redemption payment”, not silently emended to “your thousand”. All square-bracketed supplements remain bracketed, including the alternative ending.
