شريك (report 267; identity unresolved)

ʿAmr ibn ʿĀṣim al-Marwazī related to us. He said: I heard Abū Bakr al-Naẓar ibn Muḥammad al-Sayyārī say: I heard al-Baghawī say: Abū Yūsuf and Sharīk met before Hārūn, Commander of the Believers. Sharīk said to him: ‘Caliph! This judge of yours, Abū Ḥanīfa’s companion, claims that his faith is like Gabriel’s.’ The Commander of the Believers became angry and asked Abū Yūsuf: ‘Do you say this?’ He said: ‘I did not say it that way. I said: “I believe in what Gabriel believed in.” But this man related from al-Aʿmash, tracing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: “Remain upright toward Quraysh as long as they remain upright toward you. If they cease to do so, put your swords on your shoulders and wipe out their multitude.”’ Hārūn asked Sharīk: ‘Did you relate this?’ He said: ‘Yes; al-Aʿmash related it to us.’ He said: ‘Seize him.’ They took him out. Al-Baghawī said: I was in the chamberlain’s gathering when he was brought out with his waist-wrapper placed around his neck.

The printed name النظر is retained as al-Naẓar. The reported accusation and the quoted report are kept distinct from Abū Yūsuf’s reply.
