Abu al-Fadl al-Fath ibn al-Mubarak informed us, from Abu ʿUlwan al-Fazari; he said: Ibn al-Bukhturi related to us; he said: I heard Abu ʿUthman say: Ibn al-Mubarak said: I was with Maʿmar, and he forbade me to attend Abu Hanifa. When he forbade me, I went home and wrote down four or five of Abu Hanifa's questions. I came to Maʿmar and put one to him, then spoke of the second. He looked at me while I was looking at the sheet and realized I was presenting things from the sheet. He said: Give me the sheet. I handed it to him, and he said: These statements are good statements. I said: It is the position of my companion you forbade me to attend, Abu Hanifa. He said: What reached us about him was different from this. Go and remain with him—two or three times.
