حدثنا أحمد بن محمد الكوفي، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن الحسن بن سعيد بن عثمان، قال: حدثنا مصبح بن الهِلقام، قال: حدثني محمد بن الخطاب بن عمارة السدوسي، قال: رأيت عمر بن قيس الماضر، وعمر بن ذر، ومسلم بن النحاة، وأبا حنيفة جاؤا إلى محارب بن دثار في حاجة فقضى حاجتهم، فلما قاموا قال لهم أبو حنيفة: مرّوا بنا على مجلس الراعين، حتى تعلموا أن الشرف في غيرهم.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Kūfī related to us: Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Saʿīd ibn ʿUthmān related to us: Muṣabbiḥ ibn al-Hilqām related to us: Muḥammad ibn al-Khaṭṭāb ibn ʿUmāra al-Sadūsī related to me: I saw ʿUmar ibn Qays al-Māḍir, ʿUmar ibn Dharr, Muslim ibn al-Nuḥāt, and Abū Ḥanīfa come to Muḥārib ibn Dithār with a need, which he fulfilled. When they got up, Abū Ḥanīfa said to them, ‘Let us pass by the shepherds’ gathering, so that you may know that distinction lies with others besides them.’
‘Shepherds’ renders the supplied الراعين literally; the group indicated by ‘them’ is not further identified.
