ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Kassī

ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Saʿd al-Kassī related to us. He said: I heard al-Fatḥ ibn ʿAmr say: I heard al-Luʾluʾī say: I arrived in Mecca and found Yaḥyā ibn Sulaym al-Ṭāʾifī sitting among a gathering, reading Ibn Jurayj’s book on the pilgrimage rites. He said: He would say, “ʿAṭāʾ said to me,” and “I asked ʿAṭāʾ.” He said: The shaykh was impressed by these questions and said: “Where is Abū Ḥanīfa in relation to these questions?” I said: “By God, now the occasion to speak has come.” I said to him: “May God have mercy on you! Abū Ḥanīfa, may God be pleased with him, has passed away, and I am one of his closest students. Will you permit me to speak?” He said to me: “Who are you?” I said: “I am al-Ḥasan ibn Ziyād al-Luʾluʾī.” He said: “I will not permit you—again, I will not permit you.” Had he permitted me, I would have made him a warning to everyone.

Al-Faḍl ibn Bassām al-Bukhārī, ʿAlī ibn al-Farazdaq al-Marwazī, and ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Kassī related to us. They said: al-ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad related to us. He said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from ʿĀṣim, from Abū Razīn, from Ibn ʿAbbās, may God be pleased with them both, concerning a woman who turns away: He said: She is kept alive. Al-ʿAbbās said: I was sitting before Abū ʿĀṣim. When he related Sufyān’s report, I wrote it down. Then he related Abū Ḥanīfa’s report, and I held back my hand. He saw me and said: ‘Write.’ I said: ‘I have written Sufyān’s report.’ He said to me: ‘Madman!’—or ‘Fool!’—‘Write. We used to think that Sufyān had concealed Abū Ḥanīfa in his chain.’

ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Kissī related to us: Shuʿayb ibn Ayyūb al-Wāsiṭī related to us: I heard ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Ḥimmānī the elder say: I heard Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—say: I dreamed that I was opening the Prophet’s grave—God bless him and grant him peace—and placing his bones against my chest. This greatly alarmed me, so I asked someone to ask Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn about it. He said, ‘This man revives the Sunna of God’s Prophet—God bless him and grant him peace.’ He did not mention Yūsuf ibn Maymūn.
