سمعت أبا سهيل سهل بن بشر، قال: سمعت سعدان من أهل رامِيثَنِيَّة، يقول: قال علي بن الجعد الجوهري: [إذا] اختلف شعبة وسفيان في حديث، فانظر ما قال أبو حنيفة في أحدهما، فخذ به، لمعرفته بالسنة.

I heard Abū Suhayl Sahl ibn Bishr; he said: I heard: Saʿdān, of the people of Rāmīthaniyya, saying: ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd al-Jawharī said: [When] Shuʿba and Sufyān differ about a report, look at what Abū Ḥanīfa says concerning either of them and adopt it, because of his knowledge of the Sunna.
