Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Shāh al-Harawī related to us. He said: Aḥmad ibn Muṣʿab related to us. He said: Ḥammād ibn Qīrāṭ related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, from Ḥammād, from Ibrāhīm, may God have mercy on them, who said: The earlier generations were men who used dye, and there was incense in their clothes. They would begin with those upon whom they closed their doors. If anything remained, it went to relatives; if anything remained, to neighbors; and if anything still remained, then here and there.
“Those upon whom they closed their doors” refers to members of their own households; the unusual opening wording is translated without changing the Arabic.
