Muḥammad ibn al-Layth ibn Saʿīd al-Sarakhsī related to us. He said: Jaʿfar ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb related to me. He said: I heard ʿĪsā ibn Naṣr say: I heard ʿUmāra say: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us, from ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAlqama, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, may God be pleased with him, That he attended to the Messenger of God’s cloak, mount, toothstick and private affairs, peace and blessings be upon him. Whenever the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, entered his house, he would send his mother, Umm ʿAbd, to enter the Prophet’s house and observe his conduct, manner and bearing. She would tell ʿAbd Allāh about these, so that he could imitate him.
The source’s unusual والدة أم عبد is rendered as his mother, Umm ʿAbd, without silently expanding her identity.
