Statement attributed to this scholar

Abū Muqātil al-Samarqandī said: When Abū Ḥanīfa began giving legal opinions and his companions gathered, he composed the Book of Prayer. They circulated it among themselves and called it the Book of the Bride. Then they missed Abū Ḥanīfa: he remained at home. Distressed, they visited and asked: “What has kept you from your gathering, after encouraging us to seek knowledge?” He answered: “I saw a dream that I disliked, so I did not come.” They asked what it was. He said: “I dreamed that I was opening the Prophet’s grave. This horrified me and kept me away.” They said a companion of Ibn Sīrīn was present. They went to him and related the dream. He answered: “This man revives the Prophet’s practice after it has been allowed to die.” They brought Abū Ḥanīfa the good news and invited the man, who interpreted it in the same way. Abū Ḥanīfa rejoiced, came out and sat with his companions.
