Related to us: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbda; he said: related to us: Ḥafṣ ibn Dāwūd al-Rabaʿī and Naṣr ibn al-Mughīra; they said: related to us: ʿĪsā ibn Mūsā al-Taymī; he said: related to us: Abū ʿUmar al-Ṣanʿānī—he is Ḥafṣ ibn Maysara—who said: Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—entered [upon] Qatāda, and he asked him: “Are you a believer?” He said: “As for me, I believe in God and the Messenger of God, death, resurrection, Paradise, the Fire and destiny, its good and its evil. But concerning the description God gave: ‘The believers are only those whose hearts tremble when God is mentioned, whose faith increases when His verses are recited to them, and who rely upon their Lord; those who establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them. They are truly the believers; they have degrees with their Lord, forgiveness and generous provision’ [al-Anfāl 2–4], I do not know whether I am among them or not.” And he said: “Abū Ḥanīfa is a doubter, by the Lord of the Kaʿba.”

The questioner and respondent are left as pronouns where the Arabic leaves them implicit. The printed final nominal statement “Abū Ḥanīfa is a doubter” is retained; punctuation is not silently moved to turn it into “Abū Ḥanīfa said: a doubter”.
