كتب إليّ زكريا بن يحيى النيسابوري، وحدثني قبيصة عنه قال: حدثنا موسى بن نصر، قال: حدثنا جرير بن عبد الحميد، عن أبي إسماعيل الخواري، عن أبي حنيفة رحمة الله عليه قال: سألت الشعبي عن نصراني تزوج نصرانية فأسلم النصراني؟ قال: ما قال فيها بنو استها؟ قلت: لا أدري، قال الشعبي: يعرض عليها الإسلام، فإن أسلمت فسبيل ذلك وإلا تركت معه كما هي، وإن كانت المرأة هي المسلمة عرض على الزوج الإسلام، فإن أسلم وإلا فرق بينهما.

Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā al-Naysābūrī wrote to me, and Qabīṣa related to me from him. He said: Mūsā ibn Naṣr related to us. He said: Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd related to us, from Abū Ismāʿīl al-Khuwārī, from Abū Ḥanīfa, God have mercy on him, who said: I asked al-Shaʿbī about a Christian man married to a Christian woman, when the Christian man becomes Muslim. He asked: “What have ‘the sons of her backside’ said about it?” I replied: “I do not know.” Al-Shaʿbī said: “Islam is to be offered to her. If she becomes Muslim, that is the course to follow; otherwise she is left with him as she is. If it is the woman who is Muslim, Islam is offered to the husband. If he becomes Muslim, [they remain together]; otherwise they are separated.”
The coarse expression بنو استها is retained without identifying an unstated group. The bracketed final conditional completion is supplied for English syntax, not present as Arabic text.
