I was told from Muhammad ibn al-Nadr; he said: Muhammad ibn al-Ashʿath al-Shami related to me in Mecca; he said: I heard Abu Hanifa say to Bukayr ibn Maʿruf: Do you know why the people of Mecca hate us? He said: No. He said: Because we reject their abrogated texts, since what was revealed in Medina abrogated what was in Mecca. As for the people of Medina, we instruct that ablution be performed after cupping so that we do not spoil their prayers; therefore they do not love us—and he mentioned the story.
