ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim (father of Muḥammad; printed “أبي”)

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd al-Hamadhānī related to us. He said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim related to us. He said: My father related to us. He said: Marwān ibn Muʿāwiya related to us, from Abū Ḥanīfa, may God be pleased with him, who said: We mentioned selling a cat in the presence of ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, and he did not find fault with it.

The spelling الهمذاني is retained as al-Hamadhānī, without changing it to a different nisba.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad related to us: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim related to us: My father related to us: I heard Ismāʿīl ibn Ḥammād ibn Abī Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on them—relate from Mālik ibn Mighwal: He would sometimes sit with Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him. He said: One day I saw him being asked a question. He put it to his companions, but they were unable to answer it, so he gave his answer. Then he lowered his head for a long time, raised it toward heaven with tears in his eyes, and said, ‘O God, You know that by this I seek only Your countenance.’

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad informed us: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim related to us: My father related to us: ʿĀmir ibn Mudrik al-Ḥārithī related to us, from Junayd ibn al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Abī Dahra, who said: The authority for legal opinions in all aspects and transmitted reports was al-Ḥakam ibn ʿUtayba; after al-Shaʿbī, the people of Kufa ultimately referred to him. The authority for the Qurʾān, inheritance shares, recitation, and transmitted reports was Sulaymān al-Aʿmash. The authority for legal questions and analogy was Ḥammād. His companion who stayed with him and learned from him was Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Hamadhānī al-Kūfī informed us: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim related to us: [I heard my father:] He said: I heard Hishām ibn Mihrān say: Abū Ḥanīfa was seen in a dream as though opening the Prophet’s grave—God bless him and grant him peace. He sent someone to ask Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn. Ibn Sīrīn said, ‘Who is the person of this dream?’ and did not interpret it for him. He asked him a second time, and he said the same thing. He asked him a third time, and he said, ‘The person of this dream will bring forth knowledge in which no one before him has preceded him.’ Hishām said: Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—then understood and began to speak.
