He asked: “If the Commander of the Faithful orders me to kill a man and I kill him at his command, will I bear any liability for it?” Abū Ḥanīfa said: “Would the Commander of the Faithful order you to kill a man unjustly?” He said: “No.” Abū Ḥanīfa said: “Then what prevents you from killing a man rightfully?” A cup containing poison was handed to Abū Ḥanīfa to drink. He said: “I will not drink.” He was told: “Drink.” He said: “I will not drink.” He was told: “Drink.” He said: “I will not drink, because I know what is in it. [I will not assist] against my own life.” He was thrown down, and it was poured into his mouth. He was then released and came to the house where he was staying in Baghdad. He remained only a short while before he died. A great multitude prayed over him, and he was buried in Baghdad. May God have mercy on him and raise his stations.
