حدثنا أحمد بن محمد الكوفي، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن زهير بن حرب، قال: حدثنا سليمان بن أبي شيخ، قال: حدثني عمرو بن سليمان العطار، قال:كنت أجالس أبا حنيفة رحمة الله عليه، فتزوج زفر، فحضره أبو حنيفة، فقال له: تكلم، فخطب فقال في خطبته: هذا زفر بن الهزيل وهو إمام من أئمة المسلمين وعلم من أعلامهم في حسبه وشرفه وعلمه. فقال بعض القوم: ما يسرنا أن غير أبي حنيفة خطب، حتى ذكر خصاله ومدحه، وكره ذلك بعضُ قومه، وقال له: حضر بنو عمك وأشراف قومك وتسأل أبا حنيفة يخطب، فقال: لو حضر أبي قدَّمت أبا حنيفة عليه.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Kūfī related to us: Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb related to us: Sulaymān ibn Abī Shaykh related to us: ʿAmr ibn Sulaymān al-ʿAṭṭār related to me: I used to sit with Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him. Zufar married, and Abū Ḥanīfa attended. He said to him, ‘Speak.’ He delivered an address, saying, ‘This is Zufar ibn al-Hudhayl, an imam among the Muslims’ imams and a distinguished figure among them in his lineage, honor, and knowledge.’ Some of those present said, ‘We would not have wished anyone other than Abū Ḥanīfa to give the address,’ for he had mentioned his qualities and praised him. Some of Zufar’s people disliked this and said to him, ‘Your cousins and the nobles of your people are present, yet you ask Abū Ḥanīfa to deliver the address?’ He said, ‘Even if my father were present, I would give Abū Ḥanīfa precedence over him.’
أخبرنا أحمد بن محمد الكوفي، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن زهير بن حرب، قال: حدثنا سليمان بن أبي شيخ، قال: حدثني حجر بن عبد الجبار، قال:ما رأى الناس أكرم مجالسة من أبي حنيفة رحمة الله عليه، ولا أشد إكراماً لأصحابه منه، قال حجر: كان يقال: إن ذوي الشرف أتم عقولاً من غيرهم.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Kūfī informed us: Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb related to us: Sulaymān ibn Abī Shaykh related to us: Ḥujr ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār related to me: People have never seen anyone more generous to sit with than Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—or anyone who honored his companions more. Ḥujr said: It used to be said that people of noble standing possess more complete intellects than others.
حدثنا أحمد بن محمد الكوفي، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن زهير بن حربٍ، قال: أخبرنا سليمان بن أبي شيخ، قال: حدثني حجر بن عبد الجبّار، قال:قيل للقاسم بن معن: أنت ابن عبد الله بن مسعود ترضى أن تكون من غلمان أبي حنيفة؟! قال: ما جلس الناس إلى أحد أنفع مجالسة من أبي حنيفة، وقال له القاسم: تعال معي، فجاء، فلمّا جلس إليه لزمه، وقال: ما رأيت مثل هذا، قال سليمان: وكان أبو حنيفة حليماً ورعاً سمحاً.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Kūfī related to us: Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb related to us: Sulaymān ibn Abī Shaykh informed us: Ḥujr ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār related to me: Al-Qāsim ibn Maʿn was asked, ‘You are a descendant of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, yet you are content to be one of Abū Ḥanīfa’s pupils?’ He said, ‘People have never sat with anyone whose company was more beneficial than Abū Ḥanīfa’s.’ Al-Qāsim said to him, ‘Come with me.’ He came, and once he sat with him, he continued attending, saying, ‘I have never seen the like of this.’ Sulaymān said: Abū Ḥanīfa was forbearing, scrupulous, and generous.
أخبرنا أحمد بن محمد، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن زهير بن حرب، قال: حدثنا سليمان بن أبي شيخ، قال: أخبرني المغيرة بن حمزة، قال:كان داود الطائي يختلف إلى أبي حنيفة رحمة الله عليه، فينصرف نصف النهار، ثم يصلي معه الظهر، فقال له أبو حنيفة: تذهب إلى المنزل وترجع وتصلي معنا الظهر، فقال: إنما أكون عند خياط هاهنا بالقرب، فقال له أبو حنيفة: أقم عندنا تقل وتصب من الطعام، وتوضأ فجهد به أبو حنيفة رحمة الله عليه، فأبى.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad informed us: Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb related to us: Sulaymān ibn Abī Shaykh related to us: al-Mughīra ibn Ḥamza informed me: Dāwūd al-Ṭāʾī used to visit Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—then leave at midday and return to pray noon prayer with him. Abū Ḥanīfa said to him, ‘You go home, then return and pray noon prayer with us?’ He said, ‘I only stay with a tailor nearby.’ Abū Ḥanīfa said, ‘Stay with us, take your midday rest, have some food, and perform ablution.’ Abū Ḥanīfa—may God have mercy on him—pressed him, but he refused.
أخبرنا أحمد بن محمد، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن زهير بن حرب، قال: حدثنا ابن أبي شيخ، قال: حدثني الربيع بن عاصم مولى الفزارة، قال:أرسلني يزيد بن عمر بن هبيرة، فقدمت بأبي حنيفة رضي الله عنه عليه، فأراده على بيت المال [فأبى]، فضربه عشرين سوطاً.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad informed us: Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb related to us: Ibn Abī Shaykh related to us: al-Rabīʿ ibn ʿĀṣim, a client of Fazāra, related to me: Yazīd ibn ʿUmar ibn Hubayra sent me, and I brought Abū Ḥanīfa—may God be pleased with him—before him. He wanted him to take charge of the treasury, [but he refused], so he gave him twenty lashes.
حدثنا أحمد بن محمد، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن زهير بن حرب، قال: حدثنا سليمان بن أبي شيخ، قال: حدثنا أبو سفيان الحميري، عن علي بن حرملة، قال:كان أبو يوسف القاضي يقول في دبر صلاته: اللهم اغفر لي، ولوالدي، ولأبي حنيفة.
