حدثنا أحمد بن محمد الكوفي، قال: حدثنا علي بن الحسن بن علي التَّيمُلِي، قال: حدثنا عباس بن عامر، عن فضيل بن عثمان، عن أبي ساسان، عن أبي عبد الله، قال: سأله أبو حنيفة فقال له: يا أبا عبد الله! قول الله عز وجل: ﴿وَاللَّهِ رَبِّنَا مَا كُنَّا مُشْرِكِينَ﴾ فقال أبو عبد الله: ما تقول فيها يا أبا حنيفة؟ قال: أقول: إنهم لم يكونوا مشركين. قال أبو عبد الله: ﴿انْظُرْ كَيْفَ كَذَبُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ﴾، قال: فعلم أبو حنيفة رحمه الله ذلك، فقال: ما تقول أنت يا أبا عبد الله؟ قال: أقول: هؤلاء قوم من أهل القبلة أشركوا من حيث لا يعلمون.

Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Kūfī related to us. He said: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī al-Taymulī related to us. He said: ʿAbbās ibn ʿĀmir related to us, from Fuḍayl ibn ʿUthmān, from Abū Sāsān, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh, who said: Abū Ḥanīfa asked him: “Abū ʿAbd Allāh! What about God’s words, mighty and exalted: ‘By God, our Lord, we were not associators’?” Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: “What do you say about them, Abū Ḥanīfa?” He said: “I say that they were not associators.” Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: “‘See how they have lied against themselves.’” He said: Abū Ḥanīfa, may God have mercy on him, understood this and said: “What do you say, Abū ʿAbd Allāh?” He said: “I say that these are people of the qibla who associated others with God without knowing it.”
The quoted passages are Qurʾān 6:23–24. The translation retains the report’s attributed interpretation without adding a doctrinal judgment.
