Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā wrote to me. He said: Sahl ibn ʿAmmār al-ʿAtakī related to us. He said: Al-Jārūd ibn Yazīd related to us. He said: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us, from Ibrāhīm al-Saksakī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā, may God be pleased with him: A man came to the Prophet, God bless him and grant him peace, and said: “I cannot learn any of the Qurʾan. Teach me something that will suffice for me in place of the Qurʾan.” The Prophet, God bless him and grant him peace, told him: “Glory be to God; praise be to God; there is no god but God; God is greatest; there is no power or strength except through God.” The man said: “This is for God. What is for me?” He said: “Say: O God, have mercy on me, forgive me, guide me, provide for me and grant me well-being.”
