Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAlī related to us. He said: Al-Jārūd ibn Yazīd related to us. He said: Abū Ḥanīfa related to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said: The sun was eclipsed on the day Ibrāhīm, the son of the Messenger of God, died. The people said: “It was eclipsed because Ibrāhīm died.” The Prophet, peace be upon him, stood and prolonged his standing until they thought he would not bow. Then he bowed, and his bowing lasted as long as his standing. He raised his head from bowing, and his standing lasted as long as the bowing. Then he prostrated, and his prostration lasted as long as his standing. He sat, and his sitting between the two prostrations lasted as long as the prostration. He performed the second prayer unit in the same way. During the final prostration he wept intensely, and we heard him say: “O God, did You not promise me that You would not punish them while I am among them?” Then he sat, recited the testimony and finished. Turning to face them, he said: “The sun and moon are two of God’s signs. They are not eclipsed for anyone’s death or life. When this happens, resort to prayer. I saw myself brought so close to Paradise that, had I wished to take a branch from its branches, I could have done so. I saw myself brought so close to the Fire that I began shielding myself and you from its flames. I saw there the thief of the Messenger of God’s she-camel being punished by fire. I saw there the slave of Banū Daʿdaʿ, who stole from pilgrims with his hooked staff. And I saw there a tall, dark-skinned Ḥimyarite woman being punished over a cat of hers: she had tied it up, neither feeding nor watering it, nor letting it eat the small creatures of the earth.”
