Another companion of both Abū Yūsuf and Muḥammad was Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Samāʿa. He was one of the trustworthy men of strong retention. He recorded the Nawādir from both Abū Yūsuf and Muḥammad and transmitted the books and dictated lessons. He held judicial office in Baghdad for the Commander of the Faithful al-Maʾmūn, and continued judging until his eyesight weakened during al-Muʿtaṣim's reign, when he asked to be excused. Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn said, “If hadith scholars were as truthful in hadith as Muḥammad ibn Samāʿa is in legal reasoning, they would reach the utmost degree in it.”
